Limescale is a common, unsightly residue that can often be found around your home, most often in your bathroom and kitchen. Although it’s generally harmless, it can be a nuisance, and if left untreated limescale can cause damage to surfaces and appliances.
Taps are one of the most common victims of limescale build-up, and removing it can be a challenge without damaging the fixtures. People often use vinegar to solve the problem, but there is another common household item that also does the trick.
On the popular ‘Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips’ Facebook group, Bev Franklin shared her success story in tackling limescale without resorting to harsh chemicals. She posted: “Love this group. [I was] convinced I needed new bathroom taps having tried everything to remove limescale.”

She then continued: “I took the advice of you lovely ladies, 30 seconds later and having used a 1p coin, my taps are like new…well pleased.”
It appears that Bev isn’t alone in discovering this clever hack. Fellow group member Kim McQuinn recommended: “Two pence coin, tap it off. It’s amazing,” reports the Express.
Karen Poole also added: “Just rub a wet 2p coin over the limescale and it just falls off.” Rebecca Jackson also chimed in with detailed instructions on the technique, advising: “Get a wet 1p or 2p coin and rub in a circular motion and the limescale just falls off.”
The secret behind this method is the chemical reaction triggered between the copper in the coins and the calcium in the limescale, which helps to dissolve the buildup.
Other techniques for eliminating limescale from taps include the use of white vinegar, Viakal, and lemon juice.
