Cooler weather likely in Kansas City. How long before summer’s scorching temps return?

Cooler temperatures will bring a refreshing break this weekend to the Kansas City area, allowing the area to recover from the blistering heat earlier in the week, according to the National Weather Service.

Dry and near seasonable weather is expected on Friday and Saturday, with north and northwesterly winds dropping high temperatures into the low 90s, which is near normal for this time of year. Kansas City typically sees temperatures of 89 degrees in early August.

Dew points are expected to be drier, leading to lower heat index values across the area and “keeping our forecast comparatively cooler going into the weekend,” the weather service said.

Heat builds for next week

Even though it will be cooler, don’t start packing up your summer gear just yet — the heat and humidity will return.

The weather will begin heating up on Sunday. Winds will switch to the south, helping temperatures climb into the upper 90s.

By Monday, temperatures will be just shy of 100 degrees. The weather service said that heat index values will rise to the upper 90s and lower 100s during the afternoon.

On Tuesday, the weather will be slightly cooler for areas north of Interstate 70. The Kansas City area, however, and locations to the south may continue to see hotter conditions.

Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 90s on Tuesday and lower 90s on Wednesday.

From Wednesday through Friday, there is a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms across the area. However, the weather service said the chances of rain remain between 15 and 30%, and there is uncertainty regarding the timing and location of the storms.
