Coronation Street star reveals Amy's response to Rowan truth

Coronation Street‘s Elle Mulvaney has teased the fallout of Rowan Cunliffe’s cult storyline.

Viewers were shocked when shrewd Amy Barlow (Mulvaney) joined The Institute, after taking advice from Leanne Battersby.

Next week’s episodes will see Amy still convinced by Rowan’s promises, as she reconsiders investing in The Institute’s resource centre. But when her “malware session” goes wrong, will Amy finally see the truth?

Speaking about her character’s mindset, Mulvaney admitted she understood how Amy was taken in by the cult. She explained Amy’s “surprise” after being “fooled”.

“She doesn’t think that could happen to somebody like her and that’s what makes it a bigger shock,” said the actor.

“If she saw it coming, or she knew that this was something that could be that dodgy then she’d be more prepared for the outcome. But because it is completely out of left field, it just took her by surprise.”

She added: “It knocks her and completely knocks her confidence. She doesn’t know what to do, and the only option is to get on with it and deal with it. She has no idea she is going to lose her money.”

The star discussed Amy’s relationship with Leanne, after the latter originally introduced her to The Institute. “She will never be able to trust Leanne again ever, regardless of what happens now,” Mulvaney stated.

“Obviously, in some, in some respects, she’ll feel sorry for her, because Leanne’s not done this to be malicious. She hasn’t set out to con Amy but ultimately she’s still responsible.”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
