MEYERSDALE ― Somerset County Coroner Cullen Swank has identified the man found dead in Flaugherty Creek on Nov. 27 as Scott Herring, 58, of Meyersdale.
Swank did not have a cause or manner of death, saying that “everything is still pending.” Toxicology and other tests were done on the body and those results could take 4-6 weeks to complete, he said.
In May, Herring was arrested by Pennsylvania State Police for a May 21 incident in which he was seen walking around Large Street in Meyersdale carrying a handgun and yelling at people.
According to online court documents, Herring pleaded guilty on Sept. 5 to a charge of making terroristic threats, a third-degree felony, while the other charges of simple assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and criminal trespass were dismissed.

He was sentenced on Oct. 28 by Judge Scott Bittner to serve 4 to 23 months in the Somerset County Jail. Lt. Geoff Parrish at the Somerset County Jail confirmed through prison records that Herring was released from jail the same day.
Defendants can be released earlier for the time they have served while awaiting trial. The Daily American has contacted the Somerset County Public Defender’s Office to confirm if that is why Herring was released from jail that day.
