‘Danger to life’ alert as Met Office issues TWELVE severe snow and wind New Year weather warnings

A ‘danger to life’ alert has been issued amid a severe snow and wind warning in place across the UK over the New Year period.

Forecasters at the Met Office have now issued twelve weather warnings for parts of the UK over the four day period, between December 30 and January 2.

In England and Northern Ireland, gusts of up to 70mph may lead to travel disruption on December 31, with delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport all likely, the forecaster has warned.

Very strong winds of up to 60mph are also forecast across the whole of England and Wales all day Wednesday (January 1) and into Thursday morning (January 2), with gusts of 75mph likely around coastal areas and hills, according to the Met Office.

Residents should prepare by checking for loose items outside their homes and planning how to secure them, the forecaster warned. There is risk of ‘danger to life’ from flying debris or in coastal areas.

The warning says: “There is a slight chance of some damage to buildings, such as tiles blown from roofs. There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected

In the UK, across parts of the north and north west, a yellow warning for snow will also come into force at 9am on Wednesday, January 1. The warning covers much of the North, including northern and eastern areas of Greater Manchester, plus the city centre.

The Met Office said: “Heavy and persistent snow may bring disruption on Wednesday and Wednesday night. A band of rain in association with a deep low pressure system moving in from the west pushes east on Wednesday. This is likely to turn to snow as it moves into cold air across the northern half of the UK.

“Two to five cm and locally nearer 10 cm of snow accumulations are possible widely, with 10-15 cm and locally 20-25 cm over hills with significant drifting due to strong winds.” Meanwhile, a larger area of the England, Wales and southern Scotland is also covered by a yellow warning for wind on New Year’s Day.

The weather alert warns that snow is also likely to cause travel disruption, including to train services and roads, as well as causing cancellations or delays to flights.
