Officials shared new details on Monday after fishermen caught a dead body in their boat’s nets off the coast of Massachusetts.
The fishermen made the alarming discovery Friday morning when they pulled up a decomposed body roughly 40 miles off the coast, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement to Boston.com. The body was found “wrapped,” according to the DA’s office, although the statement did not provide additional details.
The Massachusetts State Police assigned detectives with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, joined by the U.S. Coast Guard, to respond to the scene.
TMZ, which was first to report the discovery, shared graphic photos of what appeared to be a body on top of a tarp and of officials later bringing the corpse onto a pier in Boston.
Following an autopsy, authorities announced that the body was linked to a woman in her 60s who had “numerous cancerous tumors,” the Suffolk County DA’s Office said in a statement to the Boston Herald.
“The body had been embalmed and appeared consistent with a burial at sea. We consider this matter non-suspicious and closed,” the office added.
