PROVIDENCE – The state Department of Environmental Management is inviting people – and leashed dogs – to a First Day Hike at Goddard Memorial State Park in Warwick on New Year’s Day.
The two-mile, self-guided walk is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will cross paved and gravel roads with some uneven ground. DEM staff members will be there with information about the agency’s programs and services. The agency will offer commemorative pins to participants, while supplies last.
Hikers should park at the beach parking lot in the park, which can be accessed via the second entrance on Ives Road, the DEM says. Finn’s French Crepes Food Truck will be there with food and drinks available for purchase. The walk will be held, even if it rains.

DEM Director Terry Gray said, “First Day Hikes are part of DEM’s Strategic Plan to promote our state’s natural resources by encouraging people to visit (Rhode Island’s) natural areas and state parks as part of an active and healthy lifestyle.”
Goddard Memorial State Park is nearly 480 acres and located along Narragansett Bay. It’s Rhode Island’s most popular metropolitan park, according to the DEM.
First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide effort led by America’s State Parks to encourage people to get outdoors.
