Forget Boardwalk and Park Place – Belle Isle and Eastern Market are where it’s at!
On Nov. 8, Monopoly: Detroit Edition was released for sale across the city, re-imagined with Detroit cultural sites, historic landmarks, charitable organizations and businesses replacing the iconic board game’s traditional Atlantic City-themed squares. Locations such as the Roostertail, Campus Martius, Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts, American Coney Island, 8 Mile and Pewabic Pottery make up Detroit Edition’s squares. It also features customized Community Chest and Chance cards.
The game is the only officially licensed version in the state, introduced by Top Trumps USA, the American division of Winning Moves International and under license by toy and game company Hasbro.

“Detroit’s got a lot to love,” said Tim Barney, a Top Trumps USA representative who served as Game Manager for Monopoly: Detroit Edition. “It certainly has a lot to offer. It’s got wonderful culture, interesting history, amazing attractions and businesses. And I say, why not Detroit? I’m a little surprised it took us this long to get there.
“I fell in love with it when I visited the first time. I think it’s important for me to visit each area, really immerse myself in the culture, get to know the people, learn about the things I can’t find in basic Google searches … really trying to put my thumb on the pulse of the community. And while I was there, it was like I couldn’t spend enough time in the area. There’s just so much, it’s hard to hit everything. But we did our best, and I was really eager to come back and do the launch last Friday.”
Top Trumps didn’t expect such high demand for the game, and almost immediately, the initial 10,000 copies sold out at most of its retailers across the city.
“I was at the Detroit Historical Museum’s gift shop, and I was witnessing people carrying three, four, five copies,” said Barney. “They had them under their arm and were having a hard time carrying all of them! And then, at some point, I heard about retailers limiting folks to one game per person, and you could tell people wanted more. Some of those sites are on their second and third orders, trying to keep them in stock. This has been huge. They’re talking about it around the world.”

Detroit visual artist Trae Isaac excitedly managed to snag two copies for himself.
“For me, being a kid, growing up and playing Monopoly with family and friends was it,” said Isaac. “As an adult I appreciated the themed versions, and I’ve come to realize and understand my own value and appreciation for my city and what we bring. So I felt it was natural to want two, and keep one on ice. I wanted to have it as part of my own personal collection because of my love for Detroit.”
Isaac got his copies at All Things Marketplace, one of the local retailers selling the game.
“When I went to pick up the one I ordered online,” he said, “I asked how many Jennyfer had left, and she said she had one left. And I was like, ‘Can I buy that one?’ I didn’t originally intend to get two, but I was like, ‘I might as well, since I’m here.’ So I just had to go ahead and grab it.”

The Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) is one of the many beloved institutions included on the game board.
“We are so honored to be featured on the Monopoly Detroit Edition board, along with so many other cornerstones of our community,” said DIA director, president and CEO Salvador Salort-Pons. “The Detroit Institute of Arts is proud to call this city our home and we’re excited to see this game bring people together to appreciate the spirit and character that makes Detroit so special. We’re also thrilled to be selling Monopoly Detroit Edition in the DIA Shop for all museum visitors to enjoy.”
The Detroit Zoo is also represented on the board, an exciting inclusion for the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS).
“The Detroit Zoo is where life connects, and being included as part of this special Detroit edition of Monopoly is allowing us to create meaningful connections between the Zoo and the people who love this classic board game,” said DZS Chief Experience Officer Randi Hamilton. “The Detroit Zoo is one of Michigan’s largest attractions, welcoming in more than 1 million guests every year, and we are thrilled to be included with other beloved Detroit-area businesses and organizations on the game board.”
Also included in the game box is the classic card game Top Trumps, and an additional playing card with a Detroit-specific surprise.
Preorder for December delivery
“I think our warehouse is completely cleared,” Barney said. “We’ve basically sold out, and now I have to get a reprint going immediately to make sure the games are ready again for the holiday season so that people can have it in their homes, enjoying it over Christmas break. Some retailers still have it on their shelves, but people can preorder online with us for an estimated December delivery.
