DFDS signs contract to operate ferry service in Jersey

Danish ferry company DFDS has secured a contract from the Government of Jersey to operate ferry services in the region for the next two decades, starting on 28 March 2025.

Last month, DFDS was selected as the preferred bidder for the contract.

The company will offer both freight and passenger services, linking Jersey of the Channel Islands with the UK and France.

The new DFDS Jersey ferry service will feature routes to Poole and Portsmouth in the UK, as well as Saint-Malo in France.

The company plans to increase ferry frequencies and introduce high-speed ferries for the UK routes to cater to demand during peak periods.

DFDS CEO Torben Carlsen said: “We are excited to embark on this journey with Jersey and the local community.

“The life-line ferry service is a vital link for the island, and we are fully committed to delivering reliability and an enhanced travel and transport experience for islanders, businesses and visitors.”

DFDS will manage a fleet consisting of one Ro-Pax vessel, two high-speed crafts, and a dedicated freight vessel.

Additionally, the company has committed to expanding its fleet with three new vessels by 2032.

This diverse fleet aims to meet the varying needs of Jersey’s residents and businesses while also bolstering the tourism and hospitality sectors in Jersey, France, and the UK, according to the company.

DFDS BU Channel and Baltics vice president Filip Hermann said: “Tourism and hospitality are important parts of the local economy.

“We will support connectivity with short travel time and meet demand with the right frequency of ferries, and providing freight capacity, enabling islanders to travel off-island and attracting more visitors to Jersey, and thereby support tourism in the region.”

In October 2023, DFDS announced its plans to launch battery-powered electric vessels on its English Channel routes by 2030.

The move is part of the French Government’s strategy to decarbonise ferry travel and enable green transport corridors across the English Channel.
