Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa says that he is filming a third season in the role. Talking on The Graham Norton Show last night, the 31-year-old confirmed what many fans had hoped with more episodes on the way.
When asked about Doctor Who, he said: “It is all going well. We did the second series this year, the Christmas special is coming up, and we are filming a third series next year”. This is despite the show still having not officially confirmed if it has been renewed for it’s third series with Ncuti with Disney Plus involved in producing the series with the BBC.
When casting the actor to play the next Doctor, boss Russell T Davies told ‘Doctor Who’ magazine: “Casting Ncuti meant casting him before he’d finished on ‘Sex Education’. That was a risk that we took, but it was absolutely the right risk, because it meant we got the best possible Doctor in 2024 that we could wish for.”
Russell was also asked: “How much longer will this era last?” – with Ncuti and Millie Gibson at the helm. Russell answered: “We’ve shot season two, but that’s only halfway through. We’ve got all those months of post to come. It’s a long way off, so no decisions yet. We are happy making it at the moment – we hope it continues forever.”
Ncuti, who rose to fame in Netflix’s Sex Education, wrote in the most recent issue of Doctor Who Magazine saying: “The decision to commission Season 3 won’t be made until after Season 2 has transmitted. And that’s always been the deal since the start. Hey, we might even have a day off!
“Although maybe not, with the whole of TWB [The War Between the Land and the Sea] to complete and the rest of Season 2 to hammer into shape. So the Great Work goes on. I always think: every episode of Doctor Who is someone’s first episode. Imaginations will be sparking across the world, as these 14 episodes boil and bristle and burst on to the screen.”
