Two dogs that “suffered immensely” are making a recovery after being found dumped in a small cage under a tree in Birmingham.
The German Shepherds, named Buffy and Tia, were first rescued by the RSPCA before being taken in by the Cotswolds Dogs and Cats Home.
Volunteers said the dogs, which were covered in dirt and emaciated with overgrown nails, were “gentle souls” who had endured neglect and abandonment.
An RSCPA inspector, said the pair were now getting “all the love and care they need” at the animal shelter.
Speaking of the dog’s initial condition, RSPCA inspector Kate said: “They got them out the cage and I could see how thin they were, and the fact they thought it was going to be acceptable to leave them in this cage.
“I just thought, I’m not leaving these dogs here.”
One dog, Buffy, had struggled with muscle loss and the effects of living in cramped quarters, having weighed only 17.5kg upon rescue.
But the pair had made “remarkable strides” since their arrival, a spokesperson for the animal rescue charity added.
“Despite their past, their spirits remain resilient,” they added.
“We are committed to ensuring that Buffy and Tia receive the love and care they deserve.”
The charity is also appealing for donations towards the dogs’ medical care and food.
