Dow Falls 450 Points. Nasdaq Snaps 5-Day Win Streak.

The stock market slipped on Thursday but avoided the worst if its earlier declines.

The Dow fell 451 points, or 1%. The S&P 500 dropped 0.4%. The Nasdaq Composite closed down 0.5%, snapping a five-day winning streak.

Walmart spooked markets a bit with its outlook for the current fiscal year, which fell short of expectations. That had Wall Street worrying about the economy and selling shares of retailers and other consumer stocks. In the absence of a positive catalyst, the broader market slid.
