Downtown St. Cloud coffee shop closes permanently

Downtown St. Cloud coffee drinkers might have to look for a new alternative as Oblivion Coffee Bar & Mercantile permanently closed its doors Friday.

After a year, the business has called it quits, putting a sign on its door and posting on Facebook and its website.

“We want to extend our deepest gratitude for your incredible support, loyalty and for being an essential part of our journey,” the website said to its customers.

The coffee shop, which presented an ornate and cozy atmosphere, served a variety of drinks.

“This decision wasn’t easy, and from the pit of my heavy heart, we say goodbye,” the business wrote on Facebook. “We want to extend our deepest gratitude for your incredible support and loyalty and for making our shop a cherished part of the downtown St. Cloud community. It has been a joy to serve you, share smiles, share laughs, and create countless memories over our love for a great cup of coffee.”

Owner Hailey Koep spoke about what prompted her to close on a Facebook post. She said she had several problems with the building, saying “it really sucked me dry since the beginning, and we haven’t been able to recover.”

In 1881, Arnold Daniel opened a furniture store in downtown St. Cloud. This enterprising German immigrant, who had made his living as a shipbuilder and cabinet maker, decided to try his hand at caskets. Five years later, he graduated from the Champion College of Embalming in St. Paul — ready to continue his new-found profession.

Daniel, a successful business person, built a three-story furniture building at 11-13 Seventh Ave. N. in 1911. Twenty-one years later, the Daniel family started the first funeral home in St. Cloud at 27 Seventh Ave. N. — that a little less than a century later became Oblivion Coffee Bar & Mercantile. This ornate location, which was built in 1910, is a little more than 6,000 square feet, equally divided between upstairs and downstairs.

Daniel Funeral Home is now five generations strong and has parlors in five cities in central Minnesota.
