People who claim benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) or HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) are being reminded that their payments may be made on a different date due to the Christmas period.
Benefit payments are often made early if a claimant’s payment date falls on a bank holiday. The DWP has issued a reminder to people expecting payments, as many people could see their money land in their bank account tomorrow.
In a post on social media, the DWP said: “Your payment dates may be brought forward due to the festive period. Please contact us straight away if there is a problem with your payment.”

People due to receive their Universal Credit payment on Christmas Day (Wednesday) will now receive their payment on Christmas Eve (Tuesday, December 24), while those due to receive theirs on New Year’s Day will get paid on New Year’s Eve. Payments for other benefits, including Child Benefit and Tax Credits, could also be made on a different date.
Sir Stephen Timms, minister for social security and disability, said: “While a time of joy for many, the Christmas period can be overshadowed by financial worry for others, particularly for families on the lowest incomes.
“Our Plan for Change will deliver the long-term economic stability and growth needed to improve every family’s financial security by putting more money in their pockets while we take immediate action to support them with the cost of living.

“As well as bringing forward benefit payments to continue support over Christmas, our Household Support Fund can also provide extra help, and I encourage anyone struggling to get in touch with their local council to see if they are eligible.”
How often you get paid and on what date depends on what type of benefits you claim. For example, Universal Credit is paid to claimants on the same day each month. Tax Credits are typically paid by HMRC every four weeks or weekly and Child Benefit is usually every four weeks on a Monday or Tuesday.

If your benefit payment date is changing you won’t need to do anything to ensure you receive the payment – it will still be sent automatically. Your payment date will go back to normal following the bank holiday.

The amount you’re due to be paid will also remain the same unless your personal circumstances have changed.
Benefits are usually paid straight into your bank, building society or credit union account. You should tell the office that pays your benefit if you do not get your payment on the day it’s scheduled.
