Earthquake shakes San Diego, causing road closures and rockfalls

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 5.2 magnitude earthquake rattled San Diego County and Southern California Monday morning causing landslides and rockfalls in some areas, prompting road closures.

Immediately after the earthquake struck the region, which was followed by a series of aftershocks, several major roads in San Diego were closed because of rockfalls and landslides.

La Cresta Road in Granite Hills had at least one lane blocked at Valley Rim Road from rocks that fell onto the road.

In North County, Valley Center Road at Woods Valley Road was closed due to a landslide.

Aftershocks rattle eastern San Diego County after 5.2 earthquake

Also in North County, SR-76 was blocked between Public Road and Grade Road due to debris on the road. Caltrans reports crews are out assessing SR-76 infrastructure for any damage following Monday morning’s earthquake.

Boulders fell into the roadway at the entrance of Palomar Mountain State Park and heavy equipment will be needed to remove them.

The County of San Diego says various agencies are assessing roads and facilities for possible damage. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office and county fire partners have not had any reports of major damage.
