Emmerdale’s Emma Atkins declares love for co-star as she describes ‘magic’ working with him

Emmerdale star Emma Atkins has spoken of her love for her co-star Jeff Hordley as fans will soon see their characters back together – though not in the romantic sense. Charity and Cain Dingle will soon join forces in a bid to get to the bottom of what’s happening with Belle.

As viewers of the ITV soap know, Belle is being coercively controlled and abused by her new husband Tom King and feels unable to speak to her family as Tom makes sure she becomes isolated from them.

After they tied the knot earlier this year, Tom’s coercive control over his new wife has only escalated with him tracking her phone, setting up a ‘puppy cam’ in the house and trying to jeopardise her new job at Take A Vow.

Tom, played by James Chase, has also physically hurt Belle, played by Eden Taylor-Draper, causing her to think her mental health was in decline and forcing her into a facility before making their dog Piper unwell, to force her to return home.

In upcoming scenes, as part of the manipulation of his wife, Tom takes Belle to a remote holiday cottage in Wales, thus physically isolating her further from her friends and family.

But spoilers have revealed how Charity Dingle is concerned to hear about Tom’s job interview in Wales after his and Belle’s sudden departure from the village. She calls Cain Dingle and admits how Tom reminds her of her abuser, Mark Bails. The following day, Cain worries as he also struggles to contact Belle.

A concerned Charity later learns Belle has been missing her mental health appointments so both Cain and Charity decide to break into their house to find out where the couple have gone.

With viewers already seeing Charity’s concern for Belle, actress Emma has shared why she thinks the character is the one picking up on the subtle signs that something isn’t quite right. She told the Manchester Evening News and other press: “There are very subtle things that are going on but I think the fact that Charity has, over the past 20 years, experienced levels of abuse from certain people she’s been with – most of all [Mark] Bails – she recognises the signs.

“He’s just an interesting character and she’s got her eye on him. She sees that Belle has suddenly become a shadow of her former self. Her attempts get thwarted when she approaches the girls and they all say, ‘Due to your recent circumstances and what you’ve been through, maybe you’re overreacting!’ So that’s when she decides to go to Cain.”

Meanwhile, speaking about filming with Jeff again, Emma said: “It was brilliant. Working with Jeff again was just magic, because I haven’t worked with him in quite a while and we just seem to have this effortless chemistry when we get together because we know each other, we know our history.

“Our characters just somehow really work well together. It’s great that we’re not a couple but we’re good in a crisis. We trust each other and I love the fact that Cain has listened to Charity. I just loved it. I love Jeff.”
