Emmerdale’s Jeff Hordley says ‘it’s hard enough’ as he addresses absence

Emmerdale star Jeff Hordley has told how he avoids social media due to trolling. The actor is famed for playing Cain Dingle in the ITV soap, a role he has held since 2000.

Despite his popularity on screen, and the plenty of support he and his character receive online from those who follow the show, Jeff has insisted he doesn’t want to “get dragged into that world” so he won’t be signing up for Instagram or Facebook anytime soon.

He is quoted by the Daily Star newspaper’s HOT TV column as saying: “I don’t look at social media. I don’t have Instagram and I don’t have Facebook. I have an account on X but I don’t really look at it.”

He continued: “I don’t want to get dragged into that world. There are a lot of people that want to be negative. This job is hard enough as it is, so I don’t want to deal with that as well.”

The soap star says it can help stars know the reaction to their storylines, but there is too much negativity for him to have any desire to check out people’s comments online.

He continued: “Being an actor is very exposing. It’s hard. Some young actors use social media to gauge what the reaction is to a storyline. But it’s usually quite negative.

“Sports stars are the same. They’re playing a game and then thinking, ‘What have people said about it?’ But the problem is people can be crushing.”

Jeff is also glad to see producers helping younger stars navigate social media and deal with the backlashes they can face. He said: “Companies are becoming more aware of social media and helping youngsters. It goes across all platforms. I think we need to stamp out the negativity if we can. People should just be kind.”
