Española man charged in May 2024 homicide in Chimayó

Jan. 7—An Española man has been arrested in connection with a slaying in Chimayó in May 2024.

Fabian Gallegos, 37, faces charges of second-degree murder and bribery of a witness in the killing of 41-year-old Christopher Serrano, who was found dead at his residence in the community outside Española, according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed against Gallegos.

The affidavit indicates Gallegos was arrested by New Mexico State Police on Monday. He was booked into the Santa Fe County jail Monday afternoon.

Police had arrived at Serrano’s home May 14 to arrest him on charges of kidnapping, criminal sexual contact and aggravated battery, alleging he had brutally beaten and raped his girlfriend a week before. Instead, they found Serrano dead.

Gallegos is also accused of intimidating or threatening another man who could be a witness in the murder case.

Despite numerous requests from The New Mexican for records related to Serrano’s death, state police have for more than eight months withheld all reports in the investigation.

More details on the allegations against Gallegos were not yet available Tuesday morning.

This is a developing story. More information will be provided as soon as it is available.
