ESPN gives Myrtle Beach a new nickname. Here’s what happened at the Myrtle Beach Bowl

The Myrtle Beach area has many nicknames that residents and frequent visitors might be familiar with. The Grand Strand and Dirty Myrtle are frequent ways to refer to the oceanfront destination, but one ESPN sideline reporter put her own spin on what Myrtle Beach is known as.

Alyssa Lang served as the sideline reporter for Coastal Carolina’s match-up with the University of Texas at San Antonio in the 2024 Myrtle Beach Bowl game. During the game, Lang referred to Myrtle Beach as ‘Dirty Myrty’ and later re-tweeted on X, formerly known as Twitter, the quote.

While Dirty Myrty is a more novel phrase for Myrtle Beach, the phrase Dirty Myrtle has been used frequently throughout the years. The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported in 2021 that the nickname’s true origin is disputed with various different origin stories. Indeed, many residents of the Myrtle Beach area use the nickname, and some businesses utilize it in their names.

In August 2023, the Dirty Myrtle Wing Company opened its first location near the oceanfront in Myrtle Beach, with a new one coming to Murrells Inlet.

UTSA beat CCU in the 2024 Myrtle Beach Bowl 44-15.
