Everyone wants better mental health services, but are they willing to pay for it?

I was disappointed, although not surprised, with the Department of Justice report castigating Jefferson County for its service system for adults with severe mental illness. The report would seem to imply that those responsible for implementing services are somehow negligent, failing to provide an ideal system of treatment and supports. While I agree that they system is less than optimal, it is slanderous to imply that people either in Frankfort or in Louisville are responsible for the system’s shortcomings. In fact, it is remarkable that the service providers are able to accomplish as much as they do with such hopelessly inadequate resources.

There is not one person working in the system who wouldn’t like to be doing virtually all of the things that the DOJ is recommending. So why don’t they do it? Well, readers, look in the mirror. The shameful fact is that you do not want to pay the taxes that would be required for Kentucky to provide the needed services. Instead of providing funds to improve services, you are all getting a break on your state income taxes.
