Former Top Gear star Richard Hammond has suffered series injuries in a high speed car crash, Swiss media has reported.
The star had to be airlifted to hospital after being involved in the smash during the Bergrennen Hemberg mountain race.
No official confirmation of the 47-year-old star’s injuries has yet been given, although photos have emerged showing a wrecked car in flames alongside a road in St. Gallen, northeastern Switzerland, before the blaze was extinguished by firefighters.
It is the second time Hammond has been seriously injured whilst racing, the first being in September 2006 when he crashed a Vampire dragster while travelling at 288mph.
Local police spokesperson Gian Andrea Rezzoli said the injured driver was rushed to hospital by air ambulance, according to Swiss newspaper 20 Minuten.
The driver was conscious, the spokesperson added.
Hammond was in Switzerland filming scenes for the Amazon series The Grand Tour, which he stars in along with ex-Top Gear co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and James May, according to Swiss media.
The 20 Minuten newspaper said two anonymous sources claimed that driver injured in the crash was Hammond.
