EXETER — Town Manager Russ Dean will continue to lead the town for another year.
The Select Board announced Monday their decision to approve a one-year contract extension for Dean, effective from Dec. 28 through Dec. 27, 2025. The new contract includes a roughly 5% base salary increase, raising his pay from $154,000 to $161,792.
This is the second consecutive one-year extension the town has agreed to with Dean, which again includes language for a “successor agreement” to be negotiated within six months. Before the last one-year contract began near the end of 2023, he had received a seven-year extension in 2016.

A native of Stratham, Dean began his role as Exeter’s town manager in 2005, following similar leadership positions in various Massachusetts towns.
This contract extension marks his 20th year of serving the town.
Select Board Chair Niko Papakonstantis praised Dean’s “impressive” feat on Monday, noting “you don’t often see a town manager stay in one town for that long.”
Throughout his 20-year tenure, Dean has played a key role in several significant projects in the community, including the creation of the Epping Road TIF District in 2015, the Great Dam Removal in 2016, and the recently concluded Squamscott River Siphon Improvement Project.
