We head into 2025 with not only a second term for President-elect Donald Trump in front of us but a “red wave” that unseated longtime Democrats, like Pennsylvania’s Sen. Bob Casey after 18 years. So where does this leave the left?
Some are saying the Democrats are too liberal, too focused on “woke” policies and out of touch with the average person. Others say the Democrats leaned too right and didn’t focus on issues that mattered to Americans during the November election. Well, I say it’s time we lean into policies that focus on the two big “Hs” — Healthcare and Housing — and recenter the Democratic Party on ideologies that empower everyday people to live their best lives.

I’ve talked a lot about the inequities facing everyday Americans – no matter their political affiliations – in these segments and what unites us is the reality that the cost of living is too high. People can’t make the rent, they can’t afford to buy a house and healthcare has become so out of reach that both the insured and uninsured can’t afford to get sick.
Democrats in office should be pushing policies that support healthcare for all, housing policies that support renters as well as homeowners, paid leave for all, raising the minimum wage to at least $25 an hour, end the student loan crisis, support sensible gun reform as well as supporting campaign finance reform.
Until we repeal Citizens United, and remove super PACs which act as a shadow government where government does corporations’ bidding, we will never see the policies that support we the people put into place. And that, my friends, is a fact.
