Both men were known to each other said police who have said they are treating it as an “isolated incident.” Neighbours living close to the farm have spoken of their shock at the tragedy.

One told the Liverpool Echo he saw police “fly down the road.” “We didn’t see much except about eight police cars down there last night” he said on Friday.

“They were all stood at the end of the driveways and focused their attention there at first before moving onto the far. I never really saw the couple who live there much but I would see him walking up and down the road a lot. They kept themselves to themselves. Just your typical farmers really. It’s so sad.”

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Fallows, of Lancashire Police’s Force Major Investigation Team, said previously: “A man has very sadly lost his life as a result of this, and we have a dedicated team of officers working to establish what led to his death.
