Fast-growing Granger is getting a big new addition: a grocery store.
According to a Thursday news release, Fareway will stage a groundbreaking for a new store on Sept. 30. The planned 21,000-square-foot store will be at the southeast corner of State Street and Oak Street, east of downtown.
Work on the site will begin this fall, and construction is expected to be finished in 2025.
The new Fareway will offer a place for residents to stock up on groceries in a town that doesn’t currently have a grocery store. Residents currently have to drive to Grimes, Polk City or Madrid to shop at a full-service store.

Like other locations in the Des Moines area, the Fareway in Granger will offer fresh produce, a full-service butcher counter, car carryout, self-checkout, online shopping and curbside pick-up, according to the release.
The store will serve Granger’s fast-growing population, which reached 1,698 in the 2020 Census. Granger now has a population of 2,038, according to the latest Census estimates from 2023: a 20% increase in population in three years.
Fareway, too, is expanding. The company is relocating its headquarters from Boone to Johnston and had announced or opened several new stores across the Des Moines metro.
Fareway now has 139 stores across seven states with more than 12,000 employees.
The groundbreaking in Granger is 1 p.m. Sept. 30.
