An early term fetus was found dead in a dumpster at a Georgia Walmart, deputies told news outlets.

Authorities were called just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, to the store on Steiner Way in Grovetown, The Augusta Chronicle reported, citing Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Steve Morris.

WellStar MCG Health officials contacted deputies about a patient who had recently given birth and left the fetus in the trash, leading to the grim discovery, according to WRDW.

The remains were taken for an autopsy, the station reported.

Officials know the identity of the mother and plan to speak with her, according to WJBF. Authorities didn’t say if charges will be filed.

Additional information wasn’t immediately available.

McClatchy News reached out to the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office for more information July 24 and was awaiting a response.

Grovetown is about a 10-mile drive southwest from Augusta.
