Findings in Jazmir Tucker’s autopsy to be released by Summit County Medical Examiner today

The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office is slated to discuss at 9 a.m. Wednesday the summary of findings from the autopsy of Jazmir Tucker. Dr. Lisa Kohler, medical examiner, will announce the findings at a closed media event.

Kohler is expected to answer questions about the autopsy process and office policies. She will not comment on any other part of the ongoing investigation, a news release explained. After the event, news media members who requested access will view the autopsy report in person.

This announcement comes roughly two months after the 15-year-old Tucker was shot and killed by Akron police officer Davon Fields on Thanksgiving night.

What happened Thanksgiving night?

Fields and another officer were sitting in their cruiser when they heard shots in Akron’s Sherbondy Hill neighborhood at about 11 p.m. The two officers investigated the noise at Vernon Odom Boulevard and East Avenue and encountered Tucker in front of Miller South school.

Body-worn camera footage showed Fields chased Tucker and fired his rifle about seven times. Officers, including Fields, waited about 8 minutes for officers with shields to arrive before they made physical contact with Tucker.

Officers found a firearm in Tucker’s zipped-up jacket. Two shell casings found in front of the school matched Tucker’s gun, police said.

Fields was placed on paid administrative leave, and the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation is examining the case.
