A large plume of smoke billowed into the sky over Calgary early Thursday morning as firefighters scrambled to contain a large grass fire burning just north of the Calgary zoo.
The fire broke out during the busy morning rush hour and smoke and flames were visible to motorists as it burned a large area of dry grass, just west of Deerfoot Trail, near the Tom Campbell dog park.

Calgary police officers were also called in to shut down roads in the area.
As the fire burned, the zoo issued a statement on social media saying it appreciated the quick response of firefighters and that it was “closely monitoring the animals.”
Calgary fire crews said they were able to get the fire under control just before 9 a.m.
