First lady Jill Biden will leave her Northern Virginia teaching post after last semester

First lady Jill Biden has taught her final course at Northern Virginia Community College.

The longtime educator announced she is stepping down from her position at the community college as this year closes, as reported by USA TODAY Monday.

“Last Thursday, I taught my last class of the semester, and my final class ever at Northern Virginia Community College,” Biden told a virtual thank you event for teachers. “I will always love this profession, which is why I continued to teach full time while serving as your first lady.”

This decision comes as she and President Biden must prepare to leave the White House next month. The Delaware Democrat’s administration must clear the way for returning President-elect Donald Trump, on Jan. 20, 2025.

The virtual address for teachers, as previously reported by USA TODAY, mirrored her first official event as first lady. In 2021, she also spoke alongside National Education Association president Becky Pringle and American Federation of Teachers president Randi Weingarten.

Now, she’ll be stepping away – from this role anyway.

“I trust that you know you have left a legacy that won’t end as you leave the people’s house,” Pringle said this time around. “You’ll continue to do work because, let me tell you, I know I, for one, I’ll be reaching out.”
