FLORENCE, Italy (WJTV) – My wife and I visited a special cemetery near Florence, Italy.
We spent a couple of days in Florence before traveling to Rome. On the way, we made a stop at the Florence American Cemetery where more than 4,500 American WWII soldiers are buried.
The cemetery is nestled in a valley with hillsides. Our group fell into a respectful hush as we walked among the headstones. Many had the names of the person buried beneath them many more reading “Known only but to God.”

How well kept the cemetery is struck me. It’s thoughtfully laid out with rows of graves all curved to fit the contour of the hillside, yet smartly dressed from all angles at the same time.
To me, this became not just another military cemetery. Well first of all, it’s in a foreign land, not in America. There are soldiers there who served in the same part of the world where my daddy was, only he came home and picked up his life.
These soldiers never made it back to own a hardware store and become a deacon or elder in their church or mayor of their town. But what they sacrificed allowed the rest of us to do so.
