Flyers Give Travis Konecny Long-Term Deal, Similar To What Cousin Bo Horvat Got With Islanders

On Thursday, the Philadelphia Flyers inked forward Travis Konecny to an eight-year extension worth $8.75 million annually:

Konecny has one year left on his deal which carries a cap hit of $5.5 million.

The 27-year-old forward had an impressive 2023-24 season, scoring a career-high 33 goals with 35 assists for a career-high 687 points, leading the NHL with six shorthanded goals, one ahead of Islanders forward Simon Holmstrom.

Coincidentally, his stat line is the exact same stat line his cousin Bo Horvat put up in 2023-24 — exactly the same.

The 29-year-old center signed his mega-deal with the New York Islanders on Feb. 5, 2023, putting pen to paper on an eight-year deal worth $8.5 million annually after a 38-goal (career-high), 32-assist season.

Horvat and Konecny are second cousins, both growing up in the London, Ontario, area.

The two trained together in the summer, but because of the two-year age gap, they didn’t face each other until Juniors, with Horvat playing for the hometown London Knights while Konecny suited up for the Ottawa 67’s.

Horvat was selected ninth overall by the Vancouver Canucks at the 2013 NHL Draft, while Konecny was selected 24th overall by the Flyers back in 2015.

Thursday is a good day for the family.

The two will face each other on Jan. 16 (UBS Arena), Jan. 24 (UBS Arena), Jan. 30 (Wells Fargo Center) and Apr. 12 (Wells Fargo Center).
