A fund has been set up to aid the family of a former Oak Ridge pastor and his wife with expenses after the couple was killed in a car crash in Southaven, Tennessee on Sept. 4.
Bobby Mullins was pastor of Kirk Baptist Church in Piperton. His wife Wanda Mullins worked as an ICU waiting room receptionist at Baptist DeSoto Hospital. He previously served as senior pastor at Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge.
In a statement on Facebook Sept. 4, the couple’s children confirmed their father’s death and said their mother sustained “catastrophic injuries” in the crash. Wanda Mullins died in the hospital later.
The couple had a home in Hernando.
In their statement, Mullins’ three children, Brandon, Melody, and Mallory, mourned their loss and thanked others for their prayers.
“We are shattered and shocked but have complete peace,” the statement read. “We know where our dad is as he most faithfully preached about the hope of Jesus Christ and Eternity week in and week out. But more importantly, he lived that hope out everyday to his family.”
A Celebration of Life service was held in Memphis on Sept. 12.
A Memphis native, Bobby Mullins previously served as national alumni president of the Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary from 2004-2006. He also served on the executive board of the Tennessee Baptist Convention from 2006-2011.
In 2009, Mullins founded Back To The Basics Ministries, which according to a bio on Mullins’ website, “is to encourage and help those who are making a fresh start of some kind in life and how to deal with it from a basic biblical view, because at some time we all need a fresh start.”
A primary focus of the ministry is the Christian TV program, “A Fresh Start.”
Mullins had spent more than 40 years in ministry and was on the ministerial staff of at least nine churches, wrote two books and composed dozens of songs, according to his bio.
At the time of his death, he and his wife had been married for 44 years.
How to give
On Sept. 11, Tom Melzoni – another former Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge pastor – posted to Facebook that the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board had set up a fund to help the family pay funeral and burial costs, plus other unexpected expenses, which were estimated at $35,000. Checks can be sent to: Mullins Family Fund, Tennessee Baptist Mission Board, PO Box 682789, Franklin, TN 37068.
