Former Vols by the numbers in 2025 MLB opening week

Opening day for the 2025 MLB season was held March 18 between the Dodgers and Cubs in Tokyo, Japan. MLB's 28 other teams opened their 2025 seasons March 27-28.

Four former Vols were on 2025 MLB opening day rosters: Jordan Beck (Colorado), Garrett Crochet (Boston), Seth Halvorsen (Colorado) and Ben Joyce (Angels).

Crochet played for Tennessee from 2018-20 and was selected by the White Sox in the 2020 MLB draft (No. 11 overall). He was traded to the Red Sox following the 2024 season.

Beck was drafted by Colorado (No. 38 overall) in 2022 and played for the Vols from 2020-22. Halvorsen was also selected by the Rockies in 2023 during the seventh-round (No. 202 overall) after playing at Tennessee from 2022-23.

Joyce played for the Vols from 2021-22 and was drafted in the third round by the Angles in 2022 (No. 89 overall).

Below is a look at performances for each former Vol during opening week.

The Red Sox's ace started on opening day at Texas.

Crochet totaled 88 pitches in five innings and struck out four batters, while surrendering five hits, two walks and two earned runs.

Joyce made two appearances out of the bullpen in the Angels' series win at the White Sox.

He was the first pitcher out of the bullpen March 29 after a strong start from Jose Soriano. Joyce allowed one walk in a 19-pitch eighth inning.

The series finale experienced a lengthy interruption from rain. Joyce finished the delayed seventh inning with nine pitches and earned a win.

The Rockies dropped two of three games to the Rays at Tampa Bay.

A fielding error allowed Beck to reach base in his first at bat of the season. He also totaled one run, one walk and two stolen bases on opening day.

On March 29, Beck singled to left field in the Rockies' second game. He did not reach base in Colorado's third game on March 30.

Halvorsen was Colorado's closer in the Rockies' win on March 29 at Tampa Bay. He pitched the final 1.3 innings and totaled 14 pitches, logging one strikeout and earning a save.
