Fort Collins police investigating suspected gang-related shootings: What we know

One person has been arrested as part of a Fort Collins police investigation into suspected gang-related shootings near Old Town last week.

Police are investigating two shootings that occurred July 30 and Aug. 2 in a neighborhood in the 300 block of North Howes Street. No one was injured in these shootings, Fort Collins police said in a news release.

Police say they’ve collected evidence to connect these shootings to gang activity, though they did not specify what that evidence is. Police said in the news release that they are being intentionally vague about the details they are publicizing surrounding these shootings “to prevent any notoriety.”

Here’s what we know about these shootings:

When were these shootings?

Between 15 and 20 rounds were fired in the July 30 shooting, striking and damaging multiple buildings, vehicles and other property in the area, according to police. Multiple shots were fired in the same area Aug. 2.

Another suspected gang-related shooting happened in March in the same area, police said in the news release.

Who are the suspects?

A suspect has been arrested for attempted murder in connection with the March shooting, police said in the news release. That suspect is in custody on a $500,000 cash bond.

The Coloradoan has confirmed the identity of this suspect with police and has requested arrest documents in the case. Additional information will be published if the case against the suspect proceeds.

Police say they have identified a suspect in the July 30 shooting who is still at large, but “detectives are following up on information regarding this suspect’s whereabouts,” according to the news release.

No suspects have been identified in the Aug. 2 shooting.

Why do police believe these shootings are gang related?

There is a history of gang-related activity in the area of these shootings, police spokesperson J Gilmore told the Coloradoan, “but we have seen an uptick in severity with these most recent shootings.”

Investigators believe the July 30 and Aug. 2 shootings are the latest incidents of gang-related activity for the area.

Are these shootings connected to another suspected gang-related homicide?

Gilmore did not say if investigators believe these shootings are connected to a suspected gang-related homicide earlier this year in north Fort Collins, about 2 miles from the recent shootings, just that the investigation is ongoing.

Andre Salas, 24 of Fort Collins, was killed in the 700 block of Mangold Lane on March 9. Police issued a warrant for the arrest of suspect Adrian Pacheco, who was arrested in Pueblo a few days later.

Police at the time said they believed the shooting could be gang related but have not released any details as to why they believe that.

What are police doing to improve safety in the area of the shootings?

“Fort Collins Police are conducting extra patrols in this area to help ensure the safety of the community and quick apprehension of any suspects committing criminal acts,” according to the news release.

Several individuals provided information to police to help make this investigation successful, according to the news release. Police are asking people in that area “remain vigilant” and immediately report suspicious or criminal activity to police by calling 911.

Anyone with information about these shootings who has not already spoken to police can call Detective Justin Burch at 970-416-2948. People can also share information anonymously by contacting Larimer County Crime Stoppers at 970-221-6868.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in court. Arrests and charges are merely accusations by law enforcement until, and unless, a suspect is convicted of a crime.
