An off-duty Fort Lauderdale Police officer shot and killed a man at an RV park marina after the property manager asked him to handle a disturbance Wednesday night, the department said.
The property manager of Yacht Haven Park & Marina, at 2323 State Road 84, directly notified Lt. Jonathan Bohm about a man at the property who was creating a disturbance, spokesperson Casey Liening said in a news release Thursday night.
Bohm arrived in an unmarked police car and asked over radio for other officers to come as back up shortly before 6:30 p.m. Bohm met with Damian Orozco, 49, “who claimed he was armed with a gun,” Liening said.

“It was during this encounter that Lieutenant Bohm discharged his firearm, striking the suspect,” she said.
In dispatch audio released Thursday night, Bohm said over radio that the man had been “threatening to attack” the manager. The dispatcher asked if the man had any weapons or if he saw any.
“He says he has a shotgun, but he doesn’t have it on him right now,” the officer said.
As a different officer asked the dispatcher to clarify what the call was for, Bohm came over radio and hurriedly said, “Start EMS!”
Moments later, Bohm said he could “not approach until I get somebody here to check for that gun.”

The dispatcher asked if the officer was OK.
“I’m not hit, but please get somebody here quick. Suspect is down,” he said.
Orozco was taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
It was not clear from the news release whether Bohm was already on the property when the manager asked him for help. Liening said there were no 911 calls made, and Bohm was not wearing a body-worn camera.
He has been placed on paid administrative leave as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates, as is standard procedure.
The RV park’s property manager did not return voicemails Thursday afternoon seeking additional information.
It was at least the third shooting so far in 2025 involving Fort Lauderdale officers. On Jan. 19, an officer shot and killed a man who got out of his car at a gas station “with what appeared to be a firearm” after fleeing from an earlier traffic stop, the department previously said. On Jan. 9, Fort Lauderdale officers shot and killed a man who was throwing “incendiary devices” after receiving a call about a fire.
