Fort Worth police investigate hit-and-run where driver was shot by off-duty officer

Fort Worth police are investigating a hit-and-run where shots were fired by an off-duty officer, hospitalizing a driver Tuesday, according to a news release.

At around 4 p.m. Tuesday, an off-duty Fort Worth police officer called 911, reporting he was involved in a hit-and-run that occurred on southbound Interstate 35W at Morningside Drive.

He said his vehicle was hit by another vehicle and the driver did not stop to exchange information, but instead drove away, according to the release.

The off-duty officer followed the vehicle, which he described to authorities as a red Ford F-150, the release says.

During the 911 call, the off-duty officer said the vehicle he was following attempted to ram his. He then reported shots were fired, the release says.

The incident continued southbound on I-35 until it came to a stop on the service road of the highway at Bellvue Drive when Fort Worth police responded, according to the release.

Officers found that the driver who attempted to flee had been hit multiple times by gunfire from the off-duty officer, the release says.

The driver received medical aid at the scene and was taken to a local hospital where he is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The off-duty officer was not injured. Police did not specify if either the driver or the officer will be charged.

Their identities have not been released by authorities.
