The period between Christmas and New Year is perfect for lounging around, catching up with family and friends, and eating all the food.
But as we start to make plans for getting home or back to work, many people across the country are looking to the weather to start planning their new year.
After a foggy but mild Christmas period, the Met Office has now issued several yellow weather warnings for wind, rain and snow, and one amber warning for rain, affecting large parts of the country. Some “persistent snow” is forecast in parts of Scotland over the next few days, according to the Met Office.

Today (December 30) until tomorrow evening, there is a snow and rain warning covering parts of Scotland, and on Tuesday, December 31, there is a snow warning affecting Orkney and the Shetland Islands.
According to Met Office weather maps, there could also be snow over high ground in parts of the north west of England on New Year’s Day. Parts of Cumbria, Lancashire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire may see snow flurries from around 7.30am, however most of the region is forecast rain and hail.
There was previously a yellow warning for snow which covered parts of Greater Manchester and the surrounding areas, but this has now been lifted. We will continue to issue updates if the forecast changes.
