A Gavin & Stacey star was “hidden away” during filming for the final ever episode in a bid to avoid a huge spoiler in the storyline. Chris Gernon, the director of Gavin & Stacey, said on Instagram that the actress Laura Aikman had to say in a different hotel and wasn’t allowed to attend various events during and after production.
But now it has been revealed why exactly the actress had to follow some stringent rules. On Wednesday evening, December 25 (Christmas Day), viewers across the UK got to say goodbye to the beloved cast and see how the series of Gavin & Stacey concluded.
The last time we saw the Shipman and West families was back in 2019, for another Christmas Special, where Nessa (played by Ruth Jones) professed her love to Smithy (played by James Corden) and got down on one knee to ask him to marry her. But, as the 2019 Christmas Special showed, Smithy was in a relationship with Sonia, played by Laura Aikman. For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter.

Gavin & Stacey: The Finale showed exactly what happened five years on. If you haven’t watched the last ever episode, then stop reading this article and head over to BBC iPlayer now. If you have watched it and want to see what our lifestyle editor, Kathryn Williams, had to say about the special episode, head over to her review here.
As fans got to see in Gavin & Stacey: The Finale episode, Smithy had left Nessa high and dry following her proposal, and was instead planning his own wedding with Sonia. While many of the well-known casts were spotted during filming in recent months, including Ruth Jones (Nessa) and Joanna Page (Stacey) down in Barry Island, as well as Melanie Walters (Gwen), Rob Brydon (Bryn), Mathew Horne (Gavin) and James Corden (Smithy) over in Trinity Street, Laura Aikman remained hidden.
As fans will probably guess, this was due to the fact that the presence of Laura on set would have possibly indicated the finale’s storyline. The series’ director, Chris Gernon, took to Instagram on Thursday morning, December 26 (Boxing Day) not only to explain Aikman’s experience of filming but to also praise the actress.

With a photo of Laura alongside Alison Steadman, who plays Pam, Gernon wrote: “[Laura Aikman] spent the whole g&s shoot being hidden away. Staying in a different hotel, not allowed to come to wrap or screening parties so no one knew Sonia was back. Such a great reveal. And she’s amazing as both actor and person.”
Meanwhile, on Wednesday evening, James Corden revealed on Instagram that he had watched the last ever episode with Ruth Jones, who co-created the show with him back in 2007. In a heartfelt post, Corden revealed that it had been “the greatest privilege” to make the show. You can read more about this here.
