German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Thursday urged the Chinese government to help to bring about peace in Ukraine.
“As a member of the [United Nations] Security Council, you not only have the right to veto, but above all the duty to do everything you can to restore peace,” Baerbock said on a visit to the Flensburger Fahrzeugbau (FFG) defence company in the northern German city of Flensburg.
She added: “That means, first and foremost, not supporting the aggressor, Russia.”
Baerbock described Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba’s trip to Beijing this week – his first to China since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 – as “important.”
“It would be a blessing, if we could finally make progress on the path to peace and if China were to fulfil its responsibilities on the Security Council accordingly,” she said.
While China has previously presented a peace plan, “nothing came of it,” the foreign minister said.
Baerbock was welcomed to the Flensburg plant by FFG director Dennis Bürjes, whose company maintains tanks involved in recovery, bridge-laying and mine-clearing for Ukraine and is training Ukrainian skilled workers in Flensburg.
The vehicles, which originated from Denmark, also include Leopard 1A5 battle tanks.
Bürjes showed Baerbock an armoured transport and support vehicle FFG has developed, which can mount Iris-T short-range air defence systems.
The German Defence Ministry has already promised to fund the project, although no money has yet been received. Bürjes said, “Ukraine has wanted this solution for a very long time” and called on the gvernment to release the funds so production can start.
