Germany’s likely next chancellor Merz triumphant amid election result

German conservative leader Friedrich Merz, the favourite to become the country’s next chancellor after initial results showed his CDU/CSU bloc leading in Sunday’s election, wants to form an effective government as quickly as possible.

“I am aware of the responsibility,” Merz told supporters in Berlin on Sunday, claiming a mandate to lead the next German government.

Initial projections show Merz’s conservative alliance – made up of the Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Bavaria-only Christian Social Union (CSU) – on 29%, ahead of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in second.

Merz said he is aware of the size of the task in front of him.

“I know it won’t be easy,” he said, while stressing that the country cannot afford to spend too long forming a government.

“The world out there is not waiting for us,” he added.

Merz thanked CSU leader Markus Söder for his party’s cooperation in the election campaign and paid tribute to his competitors.
