Man Arrested After Allegedly Doing ‘Irreversible’ Damage to Famous Peruvian 12-Angle Stone

A man who allegedly attacked the famous 12-Angle Stone in Cusco, Peru, on Tuesday, February 18, was arrested after using a metal hammer to damage the historic site, authorities reported on Thursday.The suspect, identified as Gabriel Mariano Roysi Melanio by Peru’s Judicial Branch, was sentenced to six months of preventive detention.Preventive detention is imposed in serious cases where the potential penalty exceeds five years, there is a high likelihood of the crime being committed again, and there is a risk of flight or obstruction of evidence.The 12-Angle Stone, renowned for its precisely cut and interlocking stones, is a significant part of the Incan architecture and an important national cultural landmark.“The damage to the heritage is irreversible,” said Jorge Moya Cohaguila, director of the Decentralized Directorate of Culture of Cusco.CCTV footage released by the Peruvian police shows the attack on Hatun Rumiyoq Street.
