Goat milk created Fern Willow Stables

The name on the store tucked into a corner of Shawnee Park Shopping Center on Scherm Road is a little misleading.

When you see the words Fern Willow Stables, you think of horses.

But it was goats that were responsible for this business.

Mary McCrystal explains, “My daughter raises goats. And she milks them. There was too much goat’s milk for us.

“So, we started selling it and goat’s milk soap in Hawesville and then in Evansville at flea markets.”

That led to the decision in June 2023 to open a store in Owensboro.

Goat’s milk soap sells good in the store, McCrystal said.

But goat’s milk lotion is the best seller.

Goats account for about 2% of the world’s milk supply.

The website Quora says, “Goat milk soaps contain no harsh detergents or harmful chemical compounds. The lactic acid component of goat milk is known to play a key role in cleansing. It also contains alpha hydroxy acids that break down the bonds between dead cells and remove the dull surface layer of the skin to give the skin a clean appearance.”

InsightAce Analytic says goat milk products accounted for $4.03 billion in sales last year.

And it’s expected to reach $7.1 billion by 2031.

McCrystal said she and her daughter chose the Scherm Road store because the rent was low. “It’s a decent little store,” she said.

As she says, Fern Willow Stables is “different from most boutiques.”

The goat’s milk products take up a tiny space on a counter.

The rest of the store is filled with shoes, boots, clothing, jewelry, body products, handbags, hats, scarves and a lot more.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

“We get a few orders from around Bowling Green and over in Indiana,” McCrystal said.

“The other day we got one on Facebook from Louisiana.”

She said, “We’re always getting new products in.”

McCrystal said, “I was a stay-at-home mom till this. But I like it.”

She said, “I was afraid my daughter would get burned making soap.

“So, I decided to do it myself. It’s all natural soap.”
