Grand Forks veterans association seeks sponsors, vendors and contestants for beard and mustache competition

Sep. 23—EAST GRAND FORKS — Residents with furry chins and upper lips will have the opportunity to show off their facial grooming in a beard and mustache competition planned for early November, all for the sake of helping veterans.

The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA) is planning the competition, along with other festivities, for the evening of Nov. 8 and is seeking competition participants as well as sponsors and vendors, North Dakota State Auxiliary Representative Stacy Johnson said.

“We’re hoping to have a couple tables set up for them and hoping to get several vendors at least, and looking more geared towards men items I guess,” she said.

The festivities are scheduled for 7-11 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, at the East Grand Forks American Legion. The main event will be the All-American Beard and Mustache Competition. The goal is to have 25 contestants showcase their facial hair in multiple categories, including mustache, zero- to three-inch beard, three- to six-inch beard, six inches or more and a freestyle category themed around holidays. Johnson also said there will be a silent auction, 50/50 raffle, music, vendors and food, but sponsors are needed to help make the whole evening possible.

Johnson said she wanted an event that was different from the usual, and something that would be fun for men in the area. The auxiliary members came up with the idea for a beard and mustache competition, which she said is fitting with November’s “No-Shave November” challenge, which is also a non-profit organization.

The funds raised will go toward helping veterans. The local chapter of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, an association whose mission is to support veterans and their families, focuses on wheelchair donations, home remodeling and repairs, gas vouchers, clothing, food, blankets, moving assistance, medical equipment donations and funding. Members also attend unclaimed veteran funerals and advocate for mental health support. There is also the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association Auxiliary (VCMAA) Scholarship Program, funded by donations, that are applicable to CVMA or CVMAA members and spouses, widows, children, stepchildren and grandchildren of CVMA members.

The auxiliary’s generosity is something Johnson has been the recipient of before, she said.

“I was in a serious motorcycle accident last year and I’m paralyzed now, and they, without even asking, built me a ramp on my home when I was in the hospital,” she said. “I didn’t know they were doing it, they just used funding from our chapter to do so.”
