Grand Valley residents dealing with hailstorm aftermath

GRAND VALLEY, Colo. (KREX) – Hail took the Grand Valley by storm and flooded social media Friday night.

The Grand Valley was in the path of a hailstorm that left the cities of Fruita, Mack and Grand Junction to experience something more than just frosty.

Viewers shared their videos and photos from the moment the storm started in the Fruita area and then made way across the valley.

WesternSlopeNow spoke with multiple insurance agencies to see how much damage has affected properties.

Chuck Youmans, the office manager with Rocky Mountain West Insurance, states, “One of our clients, whom I know personally, said that they had sustained damage to the sun and the skylights on their house, and they’d already filed a claim.

Two photos from viewers showed WesternSlopeNow the damage to their residences, from their cars to the properties.

WesternSlopeNow spoke with Ken Richards, one of the many State Farm agents around the Grand Valley. According to Richards, the agency has already received over 400 claims for homeowners and auto vehicles.

Richards states, “In my 16 years, I’ve not seen a hailstorm of this magnitude. We’re seeing a lot more claims on the auto side than we are on the home side, but that’s to be expected early on.”

According to Richards, some of the damages they have already seen for vehicles are broken glass, windshield damage and car body damage. For homeowner damage claims, they have found broken skylights and property damage.

“We are seeing claims all across the valley. So it hasn’t been in any one area. It’s been pretty much valley-wide,” Richards said.

Yumans states, “Just keep in mind that claims don’t cover things like gardens. So if you lost your garden in a hailstorm, you probably won’t be covered for that. If the weather caused a tree to be damaged and that tree fell on your property and caused damage, then you may be eligible for a claim in that situation.”
