Hagerstown Police have two in custody after shots fired from area near YMCA

No one was injured Wednesday afternoon after shots were fired from the area of Cortland Apartments in Hagerstown’s North End, resulting in the nearby YMCA of Hagerstown going on temporary lockdown, authorities said.

Hagerstown Police responded to the area of the 1100 Eastern Blvd North YMCA around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday after there were multiple reports of shots being fired, according to a police news release.

YMCA staff had been outside on the playground with daycare children and immediately “moved to make the children safe and then got them inside,” the release states.

Y staff locked down the facility. That lockdown was over by the time of a YMCA post on Facebook around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Hagerstown Police Lt. Rebecca Fetchu, shortly before 1:45 p.m., said people outside the Y thought they heard bullets go by, but no evidence had been found yet of bullets hitting anything on Y property.

Hagerstown Police announced shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday that two males were in custody and being questioned by investigators.

Callers told police the shots had come from the area of Cortland Manor towards the YMCA, the release states.

The southeast end of the Cortland complex of apartment buildings is not far from YMCA property.

Police found shell casings outside one of the apartment buildings and determined which apartment they came from, making contact with the residents, the release states.

Police continue to investigate the incident, coordinating with the Washington County States Attorney’s Office about potential charges, the release states.
