HCSO issues new warning to residents about phone scam

Jan. 1—The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office is again issuing a warning to local residents about an ongoing phone scam involving suspects posing as deputies to extort money.

According to officials, the scammers typically claim the victim has missed a court date, failed to appear for jury duty, or has an overdue fine. The caller then threatens immediate arrest unless the victim makes an on-the-spot payment, often requesting large sums via gift cards or wire transfers.

Residents are urged to hang up immediately if they receive such calls and to avoid sharing personal or financial information, especially under pressure.

“If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from our office and threatening arrest unless you pay, hang up immediately,” read a statement from the sheriff’s office. “It is a scam and we will never ask for money over the phone.”

The HCSO emphasized vigilance as the best defense against scams, reminding residents that legitimate law enforcement communication will never involve threats or demands for money.

Anyone who has been targeted or has questions is encouraged to report the incident to the sheriff’s office at (903) 457-2900.
