Here’s how much common school supplies will cost you this year

Back to school season is just around the corner, and parents may be picking up items on school supply shopping lists.

It might not be a huge investment to buy a few notebooks and binders, but some students need graphing calculators, which can run anywhere from $70 to $100.

Here’s a look at how much back to school shopping could cost you this year, based on some examples of local school supply requests.

Elementary school supply list

This list is from an elementary school in Jefferson County. These are the prices for the school supplies if purchased at Walmart.

This list doesn’t include a backpack, a lunch bag, headphones or other things individual classes may require.

Total: $16.45 – $81.09

Middle school supply list

This list is from a middle school in Jefferson County. These are the prices for the school supplies if purchased at Walmart.

This list doesn’t include a backpack, a lunch bag, pencil pouch, headphones or other things individual classes may require.

Total: $7.34 – $75.52

High school supply list

High school supply lists aren’t quite as specific, since students take classes with so many different teachers and each one may have their own supply requirements. It’s harder to estimate a price range on the supplies they will need.

While you can expect the usual pencils, pens and notebooks, if they are taking an algebra or pre-calculus course the most expensive item on their school supply list may be a calculator.

This is how much some of the calculators can cost from Walmart.

  • Texas Instrument TI-30Xa Scientific Calculator (not graphing) $10.82

  • Texas Instrument TI-36X Pro Four-line Scientific Calculator (not graphing) $20.73

  • Texas Instrument TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator $69

  • Texas Instrument TI-84 Plus Graphing Calculator $100
