The next storm to soak California and Oregon is expected to arrive on Friday, packing more rain and snow in a region that since Tuesday has received nearly 5 inches of rain in Redding and 2 feet of snow in the Mount Shasta area.
Mountains in eastern Shasta County will receive snowfall, but the heaviest snow will hit mountains areas in the south Sacramento Valley, said Bill Rasch, meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Sacramento branch.
The weather service has forecast the atmospheric river hitting California and the rest of the Pacific Northwest will drop up to 10 inches of rain in Redding this week and through the weekend.

Water is building up on the ground in the North State, and rain is melting snow near Interstate 5, so motorists should watch for flooded roads.
The weather service in Medford, Oregon, issued a flood warning through midnight Saturday morning for Mount Shasta, Weed, Callahan and Tennant areas.

How much rain has the atmospheric river dropped over Redding?
The storm dropped 4.84 inches of rain at Redding Municipal Airport from Tuesday to Thursday morning, Rasch said.
Expect at least another two inches by Saturday, he said: One by Friday morning, the second with the next storm.

How full is Shasta Dam after rainfall from the atmospheric river?
The storm dumped 6.6 inches of rain at Shasta Dam as of Thursday morning, Rasch said.

Shasta Dam was 56% full by midnight Wednesday. That’s slightly higher (104%) if its historic average on Nov. 20, according to the California Department of Water Resources.

How much snow fell on the I-5 corridor?
The storm dropped a thick blanket of snow on mountain communities along the Interstate 5 corridor north of Redding.
Yreka got “roughly” two inches of rain, but Mount Shasta was buried in more than two feet of snow by Wednesday, said Mike Stavish, meteorologist at the weather service’s Medford branch.

Heavy rain started Wednesday as temperatures went up to the high 30s. Mount Shasta got 1.16 inches of rain in just three hours on Thursday morning, Stavish said, creating “a heavy slushy wet mess” that can weigh down a roof and make roads slick.
Could the storm cause avalanches in Siskiyou?
Rain on top of snow can create avalanche conditions, according to the Mount Shasta Avalanche Center.
The center issued an avalanche warning, in effect through Thursday, for communities in or near Mount Shasta, Castle Lake, the Eddy Mountains and the Ash Creek Butte area.

Meteorologists are watching high risk valley areas for possible flooding, Rausch said, especially the Park Fire burn scar on the south edge of Shasta County, and in Butte and Tehama counties.
As rain continues, the California Department of Transportation warned motorists not to drive on flooded streets if they can’t see road markers. Keep the headlights on, drive slower than usual, and generally stay in middle lane because it’s not as prone to flooding, Caltrans said.
