A man believed to be sleeping rough was taken to hospital after being attacked outside a shop in Stockport. The shocking incident happened at the Merseyway Shopping Centre in the town centre early this morning (Saturday, December 28).
Emergency services were called following the assault at around 8:20am. A witness said a man in a sleeping bag outside WH Smith had suffered a graphic wound to his head and was taken away in an ambulance.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed a man in his 30s was taken to hospital with a head injury. They say the injury is not life-threatening or life-changing.

The Manchester Evening News understands the victim is suspected to be homeless. A cordon was put in place outside WH Smith on Merseyway and remained in place for several hours following the incident, the witness said. A bloodied coat and sleeping bag could be seen inside evidence bags, they added.
A GMP spokesperson said: “At around 8.20am this morning (Saturday 28 December 2024), we were called to reports of an assault on Merseyway in Stockport. A man in his 30s was taken to hospital with a head injury which is described as not life-changing or life-threatening. No arrests have been made and enquires are ongoing.”
