Hong Kong-born driver Gerrard Xie racing at Australian Grand Prix as he chases F1 dream

Hitech TGR’s Gerrard Xie makes his Formula 3 debut at Albert Park as he begins bid to follow in Zhou Guanyu’s footsteps
Hong Kong-born Gerrard Xie Yonglin will take another step along the road to his dream of racing in Formula One, when he makes his debut in the FIA Formula 3 Championship at the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday.
After a promising youth career that included an F4 title, Shenzhen-raised Xie is gearing up to follow in the footsteps of Zhou Guanyu, the only Chinese driver to feature on the F1 grid.
Xie, who represents mainland China in F3, is part of the Hitech TGR team and finished 26th out of 30 racers in qualifying at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne on Friday.
The 18-year-old will also compete in a 20-lap sprint race and a 23-lap feature on the 5.303km track.
“I’m very excited to start the 2025 racing season in Formula 3,” Xie said. “Through the testing session last month, I was able to familiarise myself with the new car and I believe that I have what I need to be focused and maximise my chances of achieving good results this weekend.”
Xie made a name for himself in karting, competing in Asia and Europe, before dominating the 2022 Chinese Formula 4 Championship, winning the title with an impressive 12 wins from 14 races.
